Community Comes Together for YMCA Cheshire Sleep Easy at Christ Church Crewe

Crewe, UK – 6 March 2026 – A wave of community spirit washed over the grounds of Christ Church in Crewe last Friday, 6 March, as local residents, dignitaries, and supporters braved the cold to participate in YMCA Cheshire’s annual Sleep Easy event. The symbolic overnight sleep-out brought the community together to raise crucial funds and awareness for young people facing the harsh reality of homelessness.

As night descended, the church grounds transformed into a sea of cardboard shelters and sleeping bags, a stark reminder of the nightly struggles faced by countless young individuals across the UK. While the experience lasted just one night, its impact resonated deeply with all who took part, offering a brief yet powerful glimpse into the vulnerability of life without a safe and stable home.

A Community United for a Cause

The event saw a remarkable turnout from across Crewe and its surrounding areas. Participants from all walks of life, including the Mayor of Crewe, Sally Graham, and local community groups, stood in solidarity with vulnerable youth. The evening commenced with a warm welcome from YMCA Cheshire’s Fundraising Manager, Tammi McClure, followed by words of encouragement from Mayor Graham and Phil Pitcher, Board Chair at YMCA Cheshire.

Participants shared hot drinks, burgers, and heartfelt conversations, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose before settling in for the night under the open sky. The Sleep Easy initiative, while not a direct simulation of homelessness, serves as a poignant educational experience, encouraging empathy and driving support for the essential services that provide a lifeline to young people in need.

A Powerful and Eye-Opening Experience

For many, the night was a profound and emotional journey. The discomfort of the cold, hard ground and the lack of sleep served as a powerful reminder of the daily hardships faced by those experiencing homelessness.

Jack McIntyre, the youngest participant, shared his perspective:

“This is my first time doing something like this. I’ve done camping in the garden before, but sleeping out here is definitely different. I wanted to take part to support the YMCA and raise awareness for people who have to face nights like this for real.”

The Urgent Need for Support

An estimated 118,000 young people are at risk of homelessness in England and Wales each year. Rising rents, insecure tenancies, and a lack of affordable housing are among the major contributing factors. Without the stability of a home or family support, young people face significant barriers to education, employment, and their overall well-being.

YMCA organisations across the country are at the forefront of tackling this crisis, providing safe and supported accommodation, housing advice, and personalised support to help young people rebuild their lives.

Turning One Night into a Lasting Impact

The funds raised from the Sleep Easy event are vital for sustaining YMCA Cheshire’s essential services. To date, the event has raised over ยฃ4000 – both online and offline – edging closer to the ยฃ5,000 target. Every pound donated makes a tangible difference in the lives of young people across the region.

The charity’s work extends far beyond providing a bed for the night. YMCA Cheshire empowers residents with access to education, employment opportunities, counselling, and the life skills necessary for independent living.

Gratitude from YMCA Cheshire

Tammi McClure, Fundraising Manager at YMCA Cheshire, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and donated.

“When people go home in the morning to a warm shower and a comfortable bed, I hope they reflect on those who have to face nights like this regularly. For many people this is their everyday reality, and this event helps raise awareness of the challenges they endure. The money raised will support the services we provide including supported accommodation, counselling, youth services and family services, helping vulnerable people across the community.”

A Display of Community Compassion

As the sun rose on Saturday morning, a palpable sense of shared purpose and accomplishment filled the air at Christ Church. The Sleep Easy event was more than a fundraiser; it was a powerful testament to the compassion and solidarity of the Crewe community, and a clear demonstration of the collective belief that every young person deserves a safe place to call home.

There is still time to make a difference. Donations to YMCA Cheshire’s Sleep Easy campaign are still open. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps sustain the vital services that change young lives across Cheshire.
