Arriving was still nerve-racking, but over time the experience I received here helped me build confidence, independence and self-reliance.”
Before coming to YMCA Cheshire, Mitch was living at home with his family and helping to care for his mum. When circumstances changed, he needed to find somewhere else to live.
With support from the council, Mitch explored a number of accommodation options before choosing YMCA Cheshire. What stood out to him was the sense of stability it could offer at a time when life felt uncertain.
That stability meant Mitch was able to continue his education, stay focused on his goals and keep moving forward with the plans he had for his future.
For Mitch, living at YMCA Cheshire did not mean putting life on hold. He saw it simply as a different route to the independence many other young people were beginning to experience.
“I come as someone who’s lived here, literally two floors above where we are now,” he says. “And I actually come with some skills that I can bring to the Board and hopefully help steward the charity through its future plans.”
Looking back, Mitch believes those skills prepared him well for the next stage of his life, including going on to university.
Years later, Mitch’s journey with YMCA Cheshire has come full circle.
He has returned to the organisation as a Trustee, bringing both his lived experience and the skills he has developed since his time as a resident.
For Mitch, there is something especially meaningful about contributing to the future of the same organisation that once supported him.
For anyone living at YMCA Cheshire today and feeling uncertain about what comes next, Mitch’s message is to make the most of the opportunities available and remember that their current circumstances do not define their future.
He encourages residents to use the time to build confidence, self-reliance and practical skills, knowing that this chapter will not last forever.
