STORIES OF CHANGE
What is Stories of Change?
From our beginnings in Crewe in 1909, our work has grown and changed with local need. Our Gresty Road home is itself part of that story – a former Engine Drivers’ Hostel, repurposed from Crewe’s railway heritage into a place of support, opportunity and new beginnings.
Stories of Change is where those lives take centre stage. It is a collection of real journeys, shared in people’s own words: moments of challenge, courage, belonging, growth and new beginnings. Some stories begin with homelessness or uncertainty; others with the need for connection, opportunity or someone to believe in what might still be possible.
But behind every building, service and milestone are individual lives. Together, they reflect what has always been at the heart of YMCA Cheshire: seeing the potential in people and helping create better lives and better futures.

Meet the people behind the stories
Mitch’s Story of Change
Mitch came to YMCA Cheshire at a time when he needed somewhere stable to live while continuing his education and planning for his future. Years later, his journey has come full circle as he returns to the organisation as a Trustee, bringing his lived experience and professional skills to help shape YMCA Cheshire’s future.
Sam's Story of Change
Sam first came to YMCA Cheshire during a period of instability, but it was when she returned in 2020 that things began to change. By focusing on her mental health, personal development and independence, she built a more stable future, and today, her journey has come full circle as a mum of three and a member of the YMCA Cheshire team.
Gareth's Story of Change
Gareth came to YMCA Cheshire during one of the most difficult periods of his life. Through finding stability, reconnecting with his passion for cooking and taking steps towards education and independence, he began rebuilding his confidence and looking towards the future again.
Moments from the Campaign Launch
Our campaign was launched during Crewe Heritage Week, making the occasion especially meaningful.
The people featured in the campaign all spent their journey with YMCA Cheshire living at our Gresty Road Campus, a place with its own important history within Crewe. The launch gave us an opportunity not only to share their stories of change, but also to reflect on how this historic building continues to play a role in the lives and futures of people in our community.
The event brought together residents, former residents, staff, Mayor of Crewe, partners, trustees and supporters to celebrate the stories, memories and experiences connected to YMCA Cheshire.
