NIGHT DUTY OFFICER

Thank you for your interest in the position of Night Duty Officer at YMCA Cheshire.

YMCA Cheshire provides supported accommodation at Valley Brook for up to 60 people who are experiencing, or are at risk of experiencing, homelessness. Our aim is to provide a safe and supportive environment where residents can rebuild their lives, develop their strengths and move towards greater independence.

The Role

We are seeking a dedicated and dependable Night Duty Officer to help ensure the safety, wellbeing and smooth operation of our supported accommodation at Valley Brook in Crewe.

You will maintain a safe and secure environment, respond appropriately to incidents and emergencies, and provide low-level emotional and practical support to residents when required. You will also undertake regular building checks, maintain accurate records and complete scheduled cleaning and light maintenance duties.

This is a varied and responsible role requiring someone who can remain calm under pressure, use their initiative and respond to residents with empathy, professionalism and respect.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for residents and staff
  • Conduct regular checks of the building, grounds and surrounding areas
  • Identify and respond to health, safety and security concerns
  • Provide low-level emotional and practical support to residents experiencing a crisis
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents and disturbances
  • Liaise with emergency services when required
  • Apply house rules and organisational policies in a respectful and supportive manner
  • Complete specific duties identified during the shift handover
  • Work collaboratively with daytime colleagues and provide a detailed handover at the end of each shift
  • Accurately record incidents, safeguarding concerns and other relevant information using the provided IT systems
  • Follow and document Missing From Home procedures when applicable
  • Complete scheduled housekeeping, cleaning and light maintenance duties
  • Ensure communal areas, kitchens, offices, corridors, stairwells and outside spaces remain clean and safe
  • Follow YMCA Cheshireโ€™s safeguarding, confidentiality, equality, diversity and inclusion policies
  • Participate in supervision, training and continuous professional development

About You

Weโ€™re looking for someone who:

  • Has experience in security, housing support, homelessness services or a related field
  • Is enthusiastic about helping people thrive
  • Has excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Can build positive relationships with residents while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Can remain calm, confident and decisive during challenging or emergency situations
  • Is able to use initiative and make appropriate decisions
  • Has an empathetic, compassionate and non-judgemental approach
  • Can support people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Understands the importance of safeguarding, confidentiality and risk management
  • Can work effectively and respectfully as part of a team
  • Is competent in using Microsoft Office, Microsoft Teams and case-management databases
  • Is willing and able to undertake cleaning and light maintenance duties
  • Is supportive of YMCA Cheshireโ€™s mission, vision and values

Experience of working night shifts or supporting people with complex needsโ€”including challenging behaviour, substance misuse, mental health difficulties or offending backgroundsโ€”would be desirable. A flexible approach and willingness to cover additional shifts when required would also be beneficial.

This is a full-time, permanent role, working an average of 42 hours per week across a four-week rota. Weekday shifts are generally 10.00 pm to 8.00 am, while weekend shifts may be 8.00 am to 8.00 pm, 8.00 pm to 8.00 am, or 10.00 pm to 8.00 am. You will usually work three weekends out of every four.

The salary is ยฃ29,375 per annum, and the role reports to the Night Duty Team Leader.
