Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, we shine a spotlight on Billierena (Billie) Marsland—a talented artist, musician, and dedicated volunteer at YMCA Cheshire. Her story is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and community support.

A Journey of Strength and Self-Discovery

Diagnosed with epilepsy as a baby and autism later in life, Billie faced challenges from an early age. She began singing before she could speak and discovered a deep love for art. However, school was difficult—bullying and anxiety led to self-harm, and at 13, she transitioned to homeschooling, where her talents flourished.

Her connection with the Crewe team at YMCA Cheshire began in June 2021, when her artwork was accepted for their first-ever art exhibition at Glo Café. She even sent poppy and sunflower paintings to Queen Elizabeth II, who was reportedly “pleased to see” her colorful artwork.

By 2022, Billie had expanded her creative pursuits, launching a craft and greeting card shop that now features work from other local artists like Cathy’s Crochet and Grace Courts Crafts Bags.

She also began volunteering officially, sourcing Christmas hamper donations from major retailers and bringing joy through music.

I’ve only ever felt totally valued here at Glo Café,” Billie shares. “I struggle with chronic anxiety and often avoid social engagement, but I always look forward to the warm welcome I receive here. My confidence has grown so much because of the incredible support from the team — they have always believed in me and my work, and I’ve never experienced that before.

A Voice That Brings the Community Together

Billie is now a regular performer at the monthly soirée, and her music can be found on all platforms as @BillierenaMars. Her presence at our events, including the Christmas celebration, Volunteers Day, and YMCA @180, has become a highlight, bringing people together through song.

As a volunteer, Billie also runs the ‘Be Chilled & Crafty Club’, giving residents a space to express themselves through art. Recently, this initiative has expanded to allow residents to sell their creations, with Abi’s ‘George the Giraffe’ greeting card now available for sale at Glo Café, with all profits supporting YMCA Cheshire.

A Safe Space for Growth and Recognition
Beyond the walls of YMCA, Billie’s achievements continue to grow. In 2024, she received a special award from The Lewis Sewell Memorial Trust, recognizing her courage, resilience, and positivity. Reflecting on the honor, she says:

I was absolutely stunned and still can’t believe it! There have been times when I needed to step back and focus on my mental health, but YMCA Crewe has always welcomed me back with open arms. That’s made all the difference.

On this World Autism Awareness Day, Billie’s story reminds us that neurodiversity is not a barrier to success—it’s a different way of seeing and enriching the world. With the right support, inclusivity, and encouragement, individuals like Billie can thrive and make lasting impacts in their communities.

Let’s continue to celebrate, support, and advocate for a world that embraces autism and neurodiversity—today and every day.
