10 October 2025

Every year on 10 October, the world comes together to recognise World Mental Health Day, a global initiative to raise awareness of mental wellbeing and to promote open, honest conversations about mental health.

The theme for 2025, “Access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies,” highlights a vital issue: ensuring that everyone, regardless of circumstance, can access the support they need when facing challenges. Whether it is personal struggles, workplace pressures, or wider crises, every individual deserves the opportunity to achieve good mental health.

Despite increased awareness, too many people still find it difficult to reach out for help or to access the right services. Barriers such as stigma, time constraints, and uncertainty about where to turn often prevent individuals from seeking support early.

Coping with Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are among the most common mental health challenges faced today. Left unaddressed, they can quietly undermine wellbeing, focus, and relationships. From sleepless nights to feelings of isolation, the effects can be far-reaching, impacting both mental and physical health.

Modern life brings increasing demands. Long working hours, academic pressures, and constant digital connectivity, all of which can make achieving balance difficult. When rest and recovery are neglected, mental health can deteriorate, leading to burnout and a reduced quality of life.

It is vital to recognise these signs early and take practical steps to protect our mental wellbeing.

At YMCA Cheshire, we are proud to be part of this global movement for mental health. Our mission is to create a supportive, inclusive environment where wellbeing comes first — not only on World Mental Health Day, but throughout the year.

We believe in providing individuals with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to manage their mental health effectively. Here are a few proven ways to cope with stress and anxiety:

Practice Mindfulness and Deep Breathing
Take a few minutes to focus on your breathing or use guided meditation apps such as Headspace or Calm to reduce anxiety and stay present.

Stay Active
Exercise is a powerful stress reliever. Walking, swimming, or volunteering in YMCA Cheshire’s sports activities can lift your mood and strengthen resilience.

Connect with Others
Talking openly with friends, family, or colleagues can help release pressure and remind you that you are not alone.

Take Time for Yourself
Rest and relaxation are essential. Schedule time to unwind, pursue hobbies, or disconnect from screens.

Reach Out for Help
Seeking professional support is a positive and courageous step towards recovery. Mental health services in Cheshire are available to provide guidance and care.

Promoting a Healthy Work–Life Balance

Maintaining a healthy balance between work, study, and personal life is crucial for long-term wellbeing. Simple yet effective strategies include:

  • Setting Boundaries – Establish clear finishing times and avoid checking work emails after hours.
  • Making Time for What Matters – Plan regular moments for family, friends, exercise, and relaxation.
  • Being Realistic – Prioritise tasks and avoid striving for perfection in every area.
  • Asking for Support – Reach out to managers, colleagues, or support staff when needed.

By prioritising balance, individuals can remain productive, focused, and mentally strong in today’s fast-paced world. Creating balance helps you stay productive, focused, and mentally strong, all vital in today’s fast-paced world.

World Mental Health Day at YMCA Cheshire

On 10th October, to celebrate World Mental Health Day 2025, YMCA Cheshire is delighted to welcome Zoo2U, whose team will bring a range of animals to meet our staff, volunteers, and residents.

Research consistently shows that interacting with animals can:

  • Lower stress and anxiety levels
  • Reduce blood pressure
  • Encourage positive emotions and social connection

This special event forms part of our ongoing Wellbeing Programme, offering a fun and natural way to support mental health across our community.

Additionally, we are hosting a Mental Health First Aid training session for YMCA Cheshire staff and volunteers. This essential training helps participants to:

  • Recognise the early signs of mental health challenges
  • Approach sensitive conversations with empathy and confidence
  • Provide initial support and signpost individuals to professional help

By equipping our people with these valuable skills, we strengthen our collective ability to foster understanding, compassion, and early intervention within our local community.
